Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey

As New Jersey’s only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey delivers advanced comprehensive care for adults and children, conducts cutting-edge cancer research, transforms discoveries into clinical practice, and provides education and outreach regarding cancer prevention, detection and treatment.  The Cancer Institute of New Jersey integrated into Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, on July 1, 2013 as a result of the New Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act.

The coveted NCI designation, awarded to only 41 such centers nationwide, is granted competitively to institutions characterized by scientific excellence and the ability to bring research discoveries to patients.   To gain a “comprehensive” designation – the highest ranking given by the NCI – a center must meet rigorous criteria in cancer care, research, prevention and education.

Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey offers the most advanced medicines and treatment options in its New Brunswick facility, as well as at its Network of 15 hospitals across the state.  Together with its Network of hospitals, the Cancer Institute of New Jersey provides care for approximately one-third of all cancer patients in New Jersey.  An interdisciplinary team of medical specialists representing all areas of cancer care, nurses and social workers is available to treat every patient with the utmost compassion, respect, and treatment options, including clinical trials.

Clinical trials test new treatments and new ways of using existing treatments for cancer.  For that reason, some Machestic Dragons have sought breast cancer treatment at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey and some have participated in trials for metastatic breast cancer.

It is therefore logical that the Machestic Dragons and the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey have established a partnership which is expected to grow steadily as both organizations explore ways to work together to fulfill our missions.  In fact, some Machestic Dragons are currently assisting with a 9-month pilot involving overweight breast cancer survivors.

Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey will again be a partial beneficiary of the Machestic Dragons 9th Annual “Paddle for Pink” Community Dragon Boat Festival in June.
